Actor Kevin Spacey surprised the Tony Awards audience Sunday night when he told a joke — and made former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton the butt of it.
Spacey, who hosted the 71st annual Broadway awards show, came out dressed in a navy blue suit with a red tie and grey-haired wig. It was clear once Spacey began speaking that he was impersonating Hillary Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton.
It’s fair to say that pretty much no one expected the “House of Cards” actor to poke fun at Hillary Clinton. But that’s exactly what Spacey did.
Specifically, Spacey, while impersonating Bill Clinton, targeted Hillary Clinton over her use of a private email server while she was secretary of state. He singled out Ben Platt, who played the role of Evan Hansen in the Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen.”
“We’ve had some exciting young performers this season. Ben Platt was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people. That’s very impressive. I was on that list a couple of times,” Spacey said as President Clinton.
“But Ben, you know who you bumped off that list? My wife,” Spacey continued, still impersonating Bill Clinton.
Then came the line that “nobody would ever think” Spacey would do.
“Between you and me, you might be a better singer, but after seeing your show, there’s no doubt Hillary is much better at creating fake email accounts than you!” Spacey quipped as Clinton. Spacey said that he “just wanted to do a joke nobody would ever think I’d do.”
“That was fun, but I’m gonna get in trouble when I get home,” the Clinton-impersonating Spacey said.

In the hit musical, Hansen creates a fake email chain between him and another student at his high school who had committed suicide just days before, in an attempt to provide the grieving parents some solace that their late son had at least one friend with whom he could talk.
