Christian Monastery in Jerusalem Defaced with Anti-Christian Graffiti

Anti-Christian graffiti was found scrawled Sunday morning on the walls of Jerusalem’s Dormition Abbey, a Benedictine monastery on Mt. Zion.

Photos posted by the Assembly of Catholic Bishops showed the Hebrew graffiti which read, “Christians to hell,” and “Death to the heretic Christians, enemies of Israel.”

Other slogans read: “The revenge of the people of Israel is yet to come” accompanied by a scribbled sword, Star of David and “idols will be extirpated,” a reference to a Jewish prayer.

The graffiti vandals also wrote “erase the name and the memory of the bastard,” an apparent reference to Jesus.

Wadie Abunassar, executive director of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops in the Holy Land, held the Israeli government responsible for providing security for the institution and for educating toward religious tolerance.

“Despite promises by the government, these incidents continue to happen,” Abunassar told Israel’s Army Radio, the Times of Israel reported.

“We have limited resources at our disposal. It’s the state’s responsibility to not only apprehend these perpetrators, but to make the necessary changes in the education system to educate against this sort of thing,” he said.

The Jerusalem Post quoted a statement by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem which described the Dormition Abbey as “a significant place for interreligious dialogue between Judaism and Christianity.”

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan vowed to track down the perpetrators.

“We will not let anyone undermine religious coexistence in Israel,” Erdan said.

“We have zero tolerance for those who undercut our fundamental democratic principles and freedom of religion,” Erdan continued. “We will deal with the perpetrators of these criminal acts.”

An Israel Police spokeswoman said police were investigating who was behind the defacement.

The Dormition Abbey has been previously targeted by graffiti vandals and arsonists.
