DC bar stirs up controversy with provocatively-named Bill Cosby themed cocktails

A new restaurant in Washington, D.C., has started serving up a controversial new cocktail drink referencing the very public sexual assault allegations against actor Bill Cosby.

The drink, which is named “Pill Cosby,” is a tequila-based mixed drink adorned with red and white empty pill capsules on top.

A spokesperson for Diet Starts Monday, the new experimental pop-up restaurant, said the drink was designed in part to raise awareness of sexual assault victims who sometimes are drugged in restaurants and bars.

“It lets people be a little more aware,” co-founder Davin Gentry said.

The boundary-pushing drink appears on a menu with an array of other cocktails named after black celebrities who have ties to the D.C. area, including Dave Chapelle and Taraji P. Henson, but the Pill Cosby is the only drink with a political overtone, according to the Washingtonian.

Jury selection for Cosby’s sexual assault trial began Monday morning for the trial that will begin June 5 in Philadelphia. One-third of the potential jurors have already said they have already formed opinions about Cosby’s guilt or innocence, and 67 of the 100 people questioned said being sequestered for three weeks in the city would constitute a hardship for them, according to  The Associated Press.

Cosby, 79, was arrested in December 2015, mere days before the statute of limitations expired for the alleged felony of aggravated indecent assault. He is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting then-college basketball team manager Andrea Constand in 2004, and since being charged, more than 50 other women have come forward with similar sexual assault allegations against the actor.

Cosby has maintained his innocence and his lawyers say he is looking forward to beginning the trial.
