Former Mexican President Felipe Calderón told CNBC Saturday that his country would not contribute “a single cent” to the building of Donald Trump’s proposed wall.
“Mexican people, we are not going to pay any single cent for such a stupid wall!” Calderón, who served as president from 2006 to 2012, said. “And it’s going to be completely useless.”
“The first loser of such a policy would be the United States,” he added. “If this guy pretends that closing the borders to anywhere either for trade [or] for people is going to provide prosperity to the United State, he is completely crazy.”
Trump appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Tuesday and offered a response to Calderón’s comments.
“I heard the head of Mexico said ‘no way,’ and I said, ‘Now the wall just got taller,” the Republican candidate told “Morning Joe” hosts.
Trump has promised that if elected president he would build a wall along the Mexico-U.S. border and make Mexico fund it.
Calderón said Saturday that Trump is “not [a] very well-informed man.”
Trump recently said in New Hampshire that the wall would help eradicate the state’s “tremendous drug epidemic.”
